RG Golden Era reunion countdown

Because our reunion date overlaps with the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, anyone planning to attend the reunion should make their travel and lodging arrangements ASAP

It’s now less than six months until our “Golden Era” reunion, set for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the former Register-Guard offices at 3500 Chad Drive in north Eugene.

Planning to attend? We hope so. Upwards of 200 people (plus partners and spouses) have been invited so far to a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of reporters, photographers, editors, managers and others who worked in The Register-Guard news operation since the 1960s dawned.

June offers some of the best weather all year in the Eugene-Springfield area, with the winter and spring rains receding and the July-August heat not yet arrived. Activities, particularly outdoor activities, abound and we are awash in tourists who come to enjoy the natural amenities that have prompted people to rightly declare our home “God’s Country.”

Those visitors create a welcome lodging crunch every summer, with the University of Oregon’s annual commencement ceremonies alone drawing thousands of adoring family members to town in mid-month. But this year also marks the return of the U.S. Olympic Trials to historic Hayward Field, which will run from June 21 through June 30 and draw even larger crowds than normal to our community.

Because of that, it’s imperative that anyone who is planning to attend our reunion make their travel and lodging arrangements ASAP.

Below are some websites that may help in making those arrangements, plus, for your information, the website for our caterer, Mac’s Custom Catering, which has its headquarters at the Vets’ Club in south Eugene and has been providing quality restaurant and catering services for 35 years.

Formal “Golden Era” registration will open March 1. Watch your email in late February for a print/online registration form that will need to be returned no later than June 1 so we can give our caterer a headcount of participants. We’re asking a $50 per person registration fee be paid in advance to cover our catering costs (the Baker family is providing the reunion site free of charge). We’ll also have a no-host bar.

Several members of our planning committee have offered to open their homes to those who may be unable to find or afford lodging otherwise. Staying with friends or relatives in the Eugene area is another possibility.

Are there others of you who live in Eugene-Springfield or nearby who would be able to provide housing for attendees coming from outside our area? If so, please email us at [email protected] with your contact information (email, phone number and address) and we’ll add you to our list.

Send any questions to [email protected]

We look forward to seeing you on June 29.

The members of The Register-Guard Reunion Steering Committee are Ann Baker Mack, Donovan Mack, Paul Neville, Lloyd Paseman, Dean Rea, Mike Thoele and Sandy Thoele.
