UO alumna Jill Bond named Register-Guard editor

Jill Bond, the news director at The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Indiana, has been named editor of The Register-Guard.

Jill Bond

Bond’s first day is June 2.

David DeMille, who has been the news editor of The Register-Guard since late 2023, will be leaving in June to focus on family and personal commitments.

Bond has worked in journalism for 18 years and has strong ties to the Eugene area. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon and was an intern in the Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism at The Register-Guard.

“This is where I learned how to be a journalist,” Bond said. “It feels right to come home and use what I’ve learned to give back to a community that has given so much to me.”

She met her husband, Cassady, in Eugene. He is a native of Oregon and grew up in Florence. After leaving the area, the couple came back to Eugene to get married on the patio at the Campbell Community Center.

“My husband and I are so excited to be returning to Eugene-Springfield, where we made so many memories,” Bond said.

Bond is known for her passion for journalism and strategically guiding coverage that resonates with the local community.

She told The Register-Guard newsroom during a video call on April 24 that she is looking forward to working with them and reconnecting with the community she loves.

After graduation, Bond covered city government and agriculture at the Herald and News in Klamath Falls before being promoted to editing roles, including news editor, where she shepherded news coverage and coached reporters.

Bond worked as metro editor at the Kokomo Tribune for three years before moving to Bloomington to obtain a master’s degree in public affairs from Indiana University. In 2021, she joined The Herald-Times, which is owned by Gannett Co., also the parent company of The Register-Guard.
